Konstruktören Gustaf Plym hade
för avsikt att bygga en båt som kombinerade den rymliga (för
sin tid!) Östersjösexans bekvämlighet med M30:ans snabbhet och förnämliga
seglingsegenskaper. Då han ville vara fri att forma båten helt efter
egen smak och idéer, togs ingen hänsyn till någon mätningsregel.
Hösten 1945 lades en serie om
5 båtar upp på Neglingevarvet, familjen Plyms eget. Den båt som
är nr 1 beställdes omgående av KSSS för att lottas ut vid båtutställningen
1946. I samband med utlottningen ordnades även en pristävlan om
lämpligt namn på båttypen, vilket blev Zephyr-kryssare. Konstruktören
hade dock själv fattat tycke för båten och då det visade sig att
vinnaren John Jönsson ej var seglare kunde han köpa tillbaka båten.
Gustaf Plym ägde och seglade sedan båten under 8 år. Han registrerade
båten i KSSS under namnet Elseli III.
De tre första byggdes i
kärnfuru, som varvet haft liggande sedan 30-talet. De två
sista byggdes i mahogny.
Neglingevarvet var känt
för sin mycket höga kvalitét. Byggsättet,
precionshyvlade plankor nitade till stålspant, introducerades
i Sverige av just August Plym, far till Gustav och Bengt. Virket
var mycket torrt, och för att förhindra svällning
mättades det redan under byggnationen med stora mängder
rå linolja.
Det går en historia att
en båtköpare, som skulle hämta sitt nybygge från
Neglingvarvet, anmärkte att båten saknade länspump.
Han ska ha fått svaret att länspumpar sannerligen inte
behövdes i Neglinges båtar...

The
designer Gustaf Plym intended to create a yacht with the comfort
of the roomy (for its day!) Baltic 6-metre but with the speed and
excellent sailing characteristics of the M30. As he wanted to be
free to shape the yacht according to his own taste and ideas, rating
rules and class designs were not considered at all..
In
the autumn of 1945 a series of 5 boats was prepared at the Neglinge
Yard, the Plym family´s own . The boat with sail no 1 was
ordered by the KSSS to be a lottery boat at the 1946 boat show.
During the lottery, there was also a name contest, and the name
Zephyr cruiser was choosen. The designer himself had taken a strong
liking to the boat, and when it turned out that the winner, John
Jönsson, was no yachtsman, the designer bought it back. Gustaf Plym
then owned and sailed the boat for 8 years. He registered her in
the KSSS under the name Elseli III.
The first three were build of
core pine, which had been stored by the yard since the 30's. The
two last were built of mahogany.
The Neglinge yard was known
for very high quality. The composite method, precision cut planking
riveted to steel frames, was introduced in Sweden by August Plym,
father of Gustav and Bengt. The planks were very dry and to keep
them from swelling they were sautarated with raw linseed oil right
during the construction.
The story goes that a buyer,
who came to collect his newbuilt yacht from the Neglinge yard, made
the complaint that there was no bilge pump. He is said to have been
told that bilge pumps were certainly not needed in yachts built
by the Neglinge yard...

Byggd i mahogny, liksom nr 5. Fanns under många år
i familjen Falessons ägo i
Luleå (där jag,
Jens M, som tonåring fick vara med och segla henne några
gånger och framför allt bli omseglad av henne många
gånger... Gissa varför jag drömt om en Zephyr...).
Pierina var en lokal legend, delvis beroende på att hon
seglades uppseendeväckande skickligt, men också för
att hon beundrades för sin skönhet.

family Falessons
in Luleå (where I, Jens
M, as a teenager sailed her a couple of times and above all was overtaken
by her several times... Guess why I always have dreamt of a Zephyr...).
Pierina was a local legend, partly because she was sailed with
remarkable skill, but also because she was much admired for her beauty.
